Doing it by the numbers

Before you send HMRC Form IHT 200 you need a reference number that's unique to the deceased's estate. You have to use this reference number on any form or written communication with the HMRC. They may ask you for the reference if you have to call the HMRC to ask them a question. You get the unique reference online through the HMRC Web site. When applying for the reference number you're asked to give your own personal details and those of the deceased. The reference number makes it easier for HMRC officials to keep track of the paperwork. Eventually the HMRC is looking to move to online filing of inheritance tax forms but it'll take a few years before the paperless dream becomes reality.
