Q What do you do when a person is not performing as you wish them to perform?

A. Go back to basics. Do they know what they are meant to be doing or has it become assumed? Once their objectives are explicit, do they have the knowledge and skills to do the job? If they have and are still not performing it has become (probably) a disciplinary issue and your HR team should be involved.

Here's an idea for you'

Take five people in your team (or one of your client's teams). What motivates each of those people now? What do you believe will be motivating them in eighteen months' time? The same factors or something different? What does that imply for the way you currently manage and lead them?
